Anthony Scaramucci Says, ‘We Are Heading Into A Nightmare Without A Night Watchman.’ He Warns Trump Must Course-Correct On Tariffs Before Losing Control

This article is more than 3 months old.

Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci is raising alarm bells over President Donald Trump’s latest tariff strategy, calling it a major threat to economic stability and the Republican Party’s future.

“Nightmare Without a Night Watchman”

“We are heading into a nightmare without a night watchman,” Scaramucci wrote in a post on X, on April 2. The cryptic message came just hours before Trump is scheduled to unveil a sweeping new round of tariffs during a Rose Garden announcement dubbed “Liberation Day.”

According to Scaramucci, the warning signs are already flashing. He pointed to a Democratic landslide in Wisconsin, rising market volatility, and growing unrest within Republican ranks over what many view as baseless tariffs. “Warning lights are on for GOP in the midterms,” he posted, adding that even “patriotic Republican senators” are pushing back on Trump’s approach.

Tariffs Stir Economic Uncertainty

The White House says the tariffs will take effect immediately, although final details are still up in the air. Trump has floated a variety of options, including a blanket 20% tariff on all imports, tiered tariffs by country, and targeted levies on items like lumber, pharmaceuticals, and microchips. According to CNN, some of these ideas were still under debate just hours before the announcement.

Markets have already reacted. Stock futures slipped Wednesday morning as investors braced for uncertainty. Futures tied to the S&P 500 fell 1%, while Nasdaq-100 futures dropped 1.2%. The Dow was down over 300 points.

Jeff Kilburg, CEO of KKM Financial, told CNBC, “I think we’re overpriced to the downside here,” suggesting markets might rebound once details are clarified. But until then, uncertainty reigns.

Allies Push Back, GOP Fractures

The international response hasn’t been warm either. The UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer told Parliament that a trade war “is in nobody’s interest” and vowed to take a “pragmatic approach.” Meanwhile, China, Japan, and South Korea have agreed to respond jointly to the U.S. tariffs.

At home, Republican lawmakers are voicing concern. Some argue the tariffs are counterproductive and could backfire politically. Scaramucci said Trump “needs to course correct on tariff strategy or risk losing control of the car.”

Trump’s announcement is set for 4 p.m. ET, just as markets close. Whether his plan will bring clarity or deepen the chaos is unclear.
