Country legend Dolly Parton’s sister, Stella Parton, lit up X with a simple but loaded question: “Does anyone think the current president will ever be held accountable?”
The post quickly went viral, racking up a wave of responses across the political spectrum. And while opinions varied wildly on whether President Donald Trump should face consequences, one thing stood out: most people don’t think it will happen anytime soon—if ever.
Some Say He Did Nothing Wrong
Supporters were quick to defend Trump, saying there’s no reason for accountability in the first place.
“Accountable for what exactly? For doing what people voted for him to do?” one user wrote.
Another chimed in, “Donald Trump has done nothing wrong.”
Others went further, calling him “one of the greatest presidents ever” and praising him for “ushering in America’s Golden Era.”
Some Say He Already Is
A handful of voices argued that Trump is already being held accountable, in a positive way.
“Totally holding him accountable. I think it’s great what he’s doing,” wrote one person.
Another added, “He will be found accountable from bringing America back from ruins and creating the greatest country in the history of the world!”
Some Point Fingers Elsewhere
Several people redirected the conversation, asking why other presidents haven’t been held to the same standard.
“Dubya Bush never got held accountable for the Iraq war. Obama could have done something and he didn’t,” one user wrote.
Another added, “Do you think Biden will ever be held accountable?”
Some Say He Should Be—But Won’t
Many commenters expressed frustration that Trump has avoided consequences so far and probably will continue to.
“Nope. I’ve given up at this point,” one user admitted. “The government chooses not to [act], so those people that choose not to get what they deserve.”
Another wrote, “I suppose there is a slight chance after he’s no longer in office but I truly doubt it. He’s a billionaire white man. I wouldn’t hold my breath.”
And some fear what could happen if he ever does face charges. “If he is one day held accountable, I really am in fear of what he’ll do next. January 6 will be nothing compared to what’s going to happen next.”
Some Think Civil Suits Are the Only Path
One user pointed out that civil suits, like the E. Jean Carroll case, might be the only way to hold Trump accountable. “Federally, he’ll pardon himself,” they added, casting doubt on any future administration’s willingness to act.
What About a Third Term?
Amid talk of accountability, another unsettling topic has stirred debate: not only does Trump seem unconcerned with facing consequences, he’s openly entertaining the idea of a third term, something that has sparked fear among critics and confusion even among some allies.
Despite the U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment clearly stating that “no person shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice,” Trump has teased the idea publicly.
His campaign began selling “Trump 2028” hats, and he’s said in interviews that he is “not joking” about serving again.
Some of his allies have floated theories about legal loopholes, including the idea that he could return as vice president and then take over through succession.
Legal scholars, however, remain unconvinced.
Notre Dame professor Derek Muller stated plainly, “I don’t think there’s any ‘one weird trick’ to getting around presidential term limits.”
Others echo the sentiment, calling such attempts a fantasy.
In the End, Most Agree on One Thing
Whether they think Trump is a hero or a criminal, most people seem to agree on this: he probably won’t be held accountable in any meaningful way.
And for many, that’s not a surprise anymore.
