Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, just dropped $10 million to support Nate Morris, a pro-Trump outsider running for Senate in Kentucky.
It’s the biggest political donation Musk has ever made to a Senate candidate.
The donation went to the Fight for Kentucky super PAC, which supports Morris’ campaign to replace retiring Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
This massive contribution is the clearest signal so far that Musk plans to be a major force in the 2026 midterm elections.
According to Axios, the donation is not only the largest Musk has ever made to a Senate candidate, but also a turning point in his reengagement with Republican politics.
Musk Rejoins GOP After Rift With Trump
Just a year ago, Musk had publicly broken with President Donald Trump and floated the idea of starting a third party.
But his latest moves suggest that phase is over. He’s now firmly back in the Republican fold, writing big checks to support the GOP’s efforts to hold onto its congressional majorities.
Musk recently made sizable contributions to the major House and Senate GOP super PACs, according to Axios.
Those donations reportedly came shortly after a private dinner in November with Vice President J.D. Vance, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich.
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO, now the world’s richest person, has also told Republican insiders that more donations are likely on the way.
Why Nate Morris?
Morris, 45, is a Kentucky native, entrepreneur, and tech executive. He founded Rubicon, a major waste and recycling company, in 2008 with just a $10,000 line of credit.
He’s running as a political outsider with a hardline stance on immigration and an anti-establishment message.
He launched his campaign on Donald Trump Jr.’s podcast and has drawn support from key conservative figures, including Sens. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) and Jim Banks (R-ID), as well as MAGA media personality Steve Bannon.
The late conservative activist Charlie Kirk also endorsed him before he died last year.
Although Trump has yet to endorse anyone in the Kentucky primary, Morris is gaining traction as the candidate most aligned with the former president’s style of politics.
Other candidates in the race include Rep. Andy Barr and former state Attorney General Daniel Cameron.
According to a source familiar with the discussions, Musk was particularly impressed by Morris’s background in business and his willingness to challenge the Republican establishment.
Musk reportedly liked that Morris, a ninth-generation Kentuckian, was presenting himself as an anti-McConnell candidate.
Musk and Vance Connection
Musk’s interest in the race may also be linked to his close relationship with Vice President Vance.
Vance counts Morris as a personal friend, and that personal connection may have nudged Musk toward supporting Morris.
The $10 million check to Fight for Kentucky isn’t just huge; it shows Musk is stepping deeper into campaign politics.
While he was already the biggest political donor in 2024, giving close to $300 million, mainly to help re-elect Trump, this is his first major play in the 2026 cycle.
What’s Next in Kentucky
Morris is expected to heavily self-fund his campaign through the May primary, in addition to the outside support he’s now getting.
Republicans are widely expected to retain the Kentucky Senate seat, but the primary battle could be fierce.
With Musk’s backing and a strong anti-establishment message, Morris could emerge as a serious contender despite his outsider status.
Whether Trump eventually endorses him could further shake up the race.
Musk’s return to big-money politics could have major ripple effects across other races as well.
If the donation to Morris is any indication, the 2026 midterms might see even more of the tech billionaire’s influence, and cash.
