White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt made waves after calling out Democrats for turning their backs on Tesla and electric vehicles because of Elon Musk’s political stance.
Leavitt Calls Out Democrats Over Attacks On Tesla And EV Drivers
“We would like Democrats to also come out and condemn this heinous violence that we have seen,” Leavitt said.
Leavitt condemned attacks on Tesla and EV owners. “We certainly think it’s despicable, the violence that has taken place against Tesla, the company, its employees, and also just Americans who have chosen to drive an electric vehicle,” she said. “Many of them are Democrats, by the way.”
She then claimed that support changed when Elon Musk shifted politically. “Democrats were big supporters of Tesla and of electric vehicles until Elon Musk decided to vote for Donald Trump,” Leavitt added. She also noted that the attorney general is investigating these incidents as possible acts of domestic terrorism.
Online Reaction Highlights Sharp Political Divide
It’s worth noting that most Democrats have not turned against electric vehicles in general. Most still support clean energy and EV adoption. The shift in sentiment has more to do with Elon Musk himself—his political rhetoric, controversial business moves, and alignment with far-right figures—than with the technology Tesla produces.
The post made by the Unusual Whales account on X quickly racked up views and triggered a firestorm of comments. Some users backed Leavitt’s statement, accusing Democrats of hypocrisy. “Exactly. The Left loved Tesla when it fit their green agenda, then Elon backed Trump, and suddenly he’s public enemy #1,” one commenter wrote. “It was never about EVs or clean tech, it was always about control.”
Others echoed that point, saying Democrats dropped Tesla not because of policy shifts but because Musk refused to fall in line politically. “So much for science and progress,” one user wrote. “The left loved EVs—until Elon refused to toe their line.”
However, not everyone agreed with Leavitt’s framing. Critics pushed back, saying the real issue isn’t Musk’s vote but his behavior. “It wasn’t that Elon voted for Trump. He bought Trump with $237 million. He turned Twitter into MAGA central,” one user claimed.
Others pointed to Musk’s exclusion from Biden’s EV summit as a turning point. “Then why wasn’t Elon invited to the electric car summit under Biden’s term? That’s what made Elon dislike Democrats!”
Some users accused Musk of manipulating votes and dismantling government offices. “Until Elon bought the presidency, most likely used technology to skew the votes, and illegally dismantled gov offices. Fixed it for her,” one wrote sarcastically.
A Political Lightning Rod
Elon Musk, once widely embraced by the left for championing clean energy, has become a polarizing figure. His political shift and public criticism of liberal institutions have resulted in a sharp divide. While some still back Tesla and see Musk as a victim of partisan politics, many others view his recent actions as a betrayal of progressive values.
As the debate continues, Leavitt’s comments have only added more fuel to the fire.
