In a recent post on X, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz took direct aim at President Donald Trump, blaming him for the current state of the economy. “Haven’t seen an economic crash this bad since the last time Trump was in office,” he wrote.

Walz vs. Trump and Musk

As expected, the post touched a nerve. Some X users immediately fired back with insults and dismissals, accusing Walz of hypocrisy.

A few pointed to previous economic woes under President Biden, with one user asking, “Where were you during 2022?” and another saying, “Does Tim Walz know the same thing would’ve happened if he won?”

Others took personal shots, accusing Walz of having no real-world financial experience. Comments claimed he has no investments or property and has relied on a government paycheck for most of his career.

However, not all the responses were negative. One user said a “Based take Tim,” while another wrote, “We really gave the country back to the guy who bankrupted a casino. A casino. Where the house always wins.”

Others chimed in with frustration toward Trump’s policies. “Pay attention to those who are excited when America and others are down. Perhaps, they do not represent the will or best interests of the people.”

Rather than back down, Walz leaned into the controversy. The next day, during an MSNBC appearance, he expanded his criticism to include Elon Musk

Musk had recently appeared emotional in an interview, reacting to Walz’s Tesla comments and calling him a “creep” and a “jerk.”

Walz’s reply? “That’s a badge of honor if he thinks I am,” he said.

“Look, my beef on this is that this guy is out there crying about his portfolio and about stock.. and my mom’s Social Security check this month is late,” Walz continued.

“He’s taking it and laughing with his chainsaw about destroying the lives and undermining things and institutions that make life better for Minnesotans.”

The Wisconsin Factor

A big part of Walz’s frustration centers on the recent Wisconsin judicial election, where progressive judge Susan Crawford defeated a Trump-backed candidate by a wide margin.

Walz called it an “absolute massacre,” noting the sharp swing from the previous one-point race last November.

He credited Musk’s high-profile involvement in the race with helping tip the scales in Democrats’ favor.

“I certainly think the DNC should think about hiring Elon Musk and send him to every race that we’re in because we will win,” Walz joked in the interview.

According to Walz, Musk’s image and political meddling have started to turn voters off. “It’s his toxic personality to begin with,” Walz said.

The interview also highlighted wins in another Wisconsin race—for state superintendent of education—where a Democrat defeated a Moms for Liberty-backed candidate who supported school vouchers and book bans.

Walz said these results reflect a broader pushback against what he sees as right-wing overreach.

Criticism of Trump’s Economic Approach

Walz didn’t limit his criticism to Musk. He also went after Trump’s trade policies—specifically his tariffs on Canadian imports—which he said are already hurting workers in Minnesota.

“It’s almost inconceivable,” Walz said. “These are fair trade deals that were negotiated fairly.” According to him, the real irony is that the folks who supported Donald Trump are the ones getting hit the hardest.

He detailed how 650 miners were recently laid off in northern Minnesota and how essential services are starting to suffer. Walz said low-income heating assistance programs are being cut, and 170 public health workers were laid off.

“This is a tax on working people that we’ve not seen in any of our lifetimes,” Walz said.

Calling Out GOP Silence

Walz didn’t stop at Trump and Musk. He directed criticism toward Republican senators who, in his view, are enabling harmful policies by staying quiet.

“There are senators that need to stand up and say something on the Republican side,” he said. “Their Senate leadership needs to step up and put an end to this.”

He warned that if they don’t, voters will tie them to the economic pain many are starting to feel firsthand.

A Moment for Democrats?

Walz wrapped the interview by applauding Wisconsin voters. “They knew the assignment,” he said.

He added with a grin, “I rarely talk good about Wisconsin because of the Packers-Vikings thing, but I’m talking good about Wisconsin.”

The governor also said he sees the Democratic Party re-energizing. He pointed to recent town halls he’s held in places like Texas, Nebraska and Wisconsin as evidence that people are ready to push back.

Walz emphasized that the stakes go beyond just political wins. For him, it’s about protecting Social Security, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring that everyone has access to due process.
