President Donald Trump is under fresh scrutiny after a revealing closed-door meeting with House Republicans.
During what was supposed to be a strategy session to rally the party ahead of the 2026 midterms, Trump appeared to accidentally expose cracks in his political armor, and possibly didn’t know he was being recorded.
In video footage that surfaced from the meeting, Trump warned his fellow Republicans:
“If we don’t win the midterms, it’s just going to be… I mean, they’ll find a reason to impeach me. I’ll get impeached.”
He also openly voiced frustration over his slipping support with voters, saying, “They say that when you win the presidency, you lose the midterm.”
He also added, “I wish you could explain to me what the hell’s going on with the mind of the public because we have the right policy.”
The comments raised eyebrows not just because of the substance, but because of the delivery. It was strikingly candid for a president who usually projects unshakable confidence.
Progressive commentator Kyle Kulinski said Trump seemed unaware that the meeting was being filmed.
“He admits things he would never admit if he thought the camera was on,” Kulinski said in a segment on “The Kyle Kulinski Show.”
A Speech Filled With Tangents and Frustration
Instead of a confident campaign rollout, Trump’s nearly 90-minute speech at the annual House GOP retreat meandered through past grievances, awkward jokes, and off-script remarks.
He brought up his actions during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, made a bizarre joke involving former President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s wheelchair use, and mused about winning over transgender voters by being “liberal-minded.”
That line about the public’s mindset is a sharp departure from his usual playbook. Publicly, Trump often boasts about overwhelming support and historic achievements.
At the retreat, he repeated claims that he won every swing state in 2024 and said, “We won the popular vote by millions. We won everything.”
But the frustration in his tone during the recorded meeting told a different story.
Kulinski believes this moment offers a rare glimpse into how Trump really feels about his slipping poll numbers and internal party tensions.
“He is high-key panicking. He’s aware of what’s happening,” he said. “He didn’t put on his poker face. He was being honest.”
GOP Faces Tight Margins and Growing Disunity
Trump’s off-script moment comes at a time when his party is in a tight spot.
The GOP’s already slim House majority shrank further after the recent death of California Rep. Doug LaMalfa and the resignation of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.
Another lawmaker, Rep. Jim Baird of Indiana, is recovering from a serious car crash.
That leaves Speaker Mike Johnson in a tougher position to keep the party united, especially on major votes like health care and spending.
Trump offered little policy direction, even as the party faces decisions on extending health insurance subsidies and avoiding a government shutdown.
Policy Nuggets or Political Noise?
He did mention the dramatic U.S. raid in Venezuela that captured deposed President Nicolás Maduro, calling it “brilliant, tactically,” and cited incoming foreign investment and tariff revenue. But those talking points were buried under a mountain of personal complaints.
In one eyebrow-raising moment, Trump said his wife, Melania, criticized his rally dances as unpresidential.
“She actually said, ‘Could you imagine FDR dancing?’” Trump told lawmakers. “And I said there’s a long history that perhaps she doesn’t know.”
When he did touch on key issues, the guidance was vague. On abortion, Trump said Republicans need to be “a little flexible” on the long-standing Hyde Amendment, which restricts federal funding for abortion services.
“You gotta work something. You gotta use ingenuity,” he said.
Warnings, Uncertainty, and a Narrowing Path
The retreat was held at the Kennedy Center, recently renamed the Trump Kennedy Center by a board filled with Trump allies, a move now being challenged in court.
Despite the chaotic tone of the event, Trump insisted, “You have so many good nuggets. You have to use them. If you can sell them, we’re going to win.”
Still, his warning to Republicans was clear: lose the midterms, and impeachment could be back on the table.
Whether Trump knew cameras were rolling or simply slipped up, the remarks from this meeting pulled back the curtain on a leader who’s increasingly aware that his grip on power might be slipping, and that not even the most loyal party retreat can keep it hidden for long.
