‘Trump Will Take Down The Whole Country With Him,’ Says James Carville—’He Doesn’t Like America, Its People, Or Its Constitution’

This article is more than 3 months old.

Veteran political strategist James Carville strongly criticized Donald Trump during a recent episode of Politics War Room, where he delivered a scathing assessment of the President and what he sees as a deepening crisis for American democracy.

According to Carville, Trump is not just a political threat but a man actively working against the country he is leading.

“He doesn’t like the United States. He doesn’t like our laws. He doesn’t like our Constitution. He doesn’t like our people,” Carville said, adding that Trump’s rhetoric and actions are part of a broader collapse that threatens to drag the whole country down with him.

Carville doubled down on his long-held view that Trump has no genuine loyalty to the United States or its people.

“He calls them fat, poorly educated slobs. He is in the midst of what I believe is a collapse.”

Listeners submitted questions about whether Trump could attempt to cancel or delay the 2026 midterms by declaring martial law.

Carville did not dismiss the concern, saying, “If he sees himself going down, he’s going to try to take the whole country with him.”

A Master of Distraction

Carville accused Trump of distracting the public with outrageous statements to avoid accountability.

“If I just sit there and let the story be that I already broke my number one campaign promise, it’s going to be terrible,” Carville said, imitating Trump. “So he says, ‘Panama Canal!’ Then the next thing it’s Greenland…then we’re going to annex Canada.. then it’s a third term.”

“He’s a great distractor,” Carville added. “But we are great distractees.”

Carville believes Trump’s economic policies are harming the very people he claims to represent. He pointed to new tariffs as an example.

“He’s going to go through with big tariffs. They will be a disaster,” Carville said. “And I think it’s going to hit rural areas harder. Democrats need to make that point convincingly. A tariff is a tax increase.”

RFK Jr. and Elon Musk Also Under Fire

Carville didn’t limit his criticism to Trump. He also called out Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Elon Musk.

“Trump and Musk may be the two biggest villains, but RFK Jr. has soiled that great family name,” Carville said. “People are going to die. The guy is a lunatic.”

On the Louisiana Amendment: A Sign of Hope?

Carville also discussed the recent failure of a Louisiana constitutional amendment backed by the state’s Republican governor. He found the high voter turnout—especially in New Orleans—encouraging.

“It went down—four of them went down, all exactly the same 65-35,” Carville said.

He also added that in a recent governor’s race, turnout in New Orleans was 11,000 less than in this amendment vote, and there wasn’t any big push to get out the vote and that means something.

“We’re Not Trying to Make Democracy Better—We’re Just Trying to Save It”

In one of his most sobering moments, Carville lamented the current state of U.S. politics.

“I never thought we were going to move away from what Martin Luther King called the arc of history bending toward progress,” he said. “Right now, it’s bending the wrong way. We’re not trying to make our democracy better. We’re like, ‘God damn, let’s just save the thing.'”

Get with it, and be smart the way Ben Wickler and the Wisconsin Democrats were.” Carville concluded with a call to action, urging Americans to stay alert and involved.
